Which skylight is right for your project?

A skylight brings natural light into the building through the flat roof. Depending on the system, it may also provide ventilation, a roof access hatch, or a smoke vent. These functions require different configurations and cannot be treated as interchangeable.

Three questions can help with the initial selection: Is this a new construction or an existing building? What are the dimensions? Is the skylight intended solely to provide natural light, or will it serve other purposes as well?

For roofers, the focus is often on finding the right solution for a specific roof. In building supply stores and specialty retailers, however, customer inquiries must first be translated into a clear product configuration. Assigning Dimensions Correctly: A Roof Cutout Is Not a Light Opening

The measurement „120 × 120 cm“ alone is not sufficient to ensure an accurate order. Depending on the product, it may refer to different points of reference. Therefore, measurements should always be reviewed in conjunction with the corresponding drawing.

The shell construction also influences product selection. Multi-shell designs can improve thermal insulation. However, the number of shells alone is not a reliable basis for comparison: the specified properties of the specific design are what matter.

Therefore, you should only directly compare U-values if they refer to the same scope of the building component and comparable reference conditions. A value for the cover does not necessarily describe the entire skylight, including the flashing. Height and Design of the Top Ring

The mounting ring connects the skylight to the roof structure. Its height must be appropriate for the planned installation. Especially during a renovation, additional insulation can alter the connection requirements.

This selection does not replace the need to determine which height is required for your roof. Renovating Skylights: Replace the Outer Shell or Upgrade the Entire System?

A damaged skylight does not always have to be completely replaced. If the frame, rim, and connections can still be used and a matching outer shell is available, replacing just the cover may be an option. However, this cannot be reliably determined based solely on a photo taken from above.

The condition of the existing components and the requirements following the renovation are key factors in making this selection. For example, a new outer shell will not fix a damaged roof connection. Similarly, an additional layer of insulation may no longer fit the existing height of the roof collar.

Roof Access and Fall Protection

Similarly, fall-through protection and walkability are different characteristics. A skylight that has been tested for fall-through protection must therefore not be stepped on, loaded, or used as a seat.
