Entrance mats with a tactile guidance system combine dirt trapping with a tactile path-finding system. They help extend the wayfinding concept through the clean-entry zone at the building entrance. For this to work, the mat, wayfinding elements, and floor transitions must all be coordinated.
rotec supports you with personalized advice and its own specialists for measurement and installation. For taking measurements, we offer a Nationwide on-site measurement service for a fee . Upon request, our staff will explain in detail what is important regarding your shipment.
Would you like to replace an existing mat or furnish a new entryway? For your initial inquiry, please provide any photos you have, approximate measurements, and the project location. Your contact person is Marcello Canu, by phone at 030 789039-47 or via Email m.canu@rotec-berlin.de.
How does an entrance mat with a tactile guidance system work?
The system uses differences in the surface to make a direction detectable. These include differences in height between brushes and rubber profiles, as well as guide elements arranged perpendicular to the rest of the mat's structure.
This structure aids navigation with a white cane. At the same time, the entrance mat serves as a dirt-trapping zone. The guide system can thus be integrated into an area that visitors pass through anyway when entering the building.
The key factor is the connection to the intended path. The tactile elements should therefore not be designed as isolated patterns within the mat. They must form a clear connection to the orientation cues located before and after the clean-off zone.
What sets this system apart from a standard profile mat?
A standard aluminum profile mat also has a textured surface. However, this does not provide clear directional information.
In a tactile design, strategically placed elements perform this function. Therefore, the location, layout, and connections of the guide structure must be incorporated into the planning of the mat surface from the outset.

What options are available?
The tactile system can be customized in terms of height and size. The number of brush strips or rubber inserts can also be adjusted to suit the intended layout.
| Characteristic | Product Information |
|---|---|
| Tactile Orientation | Different heights of brushes and rubber profiles, as well as transversely arranged guide elements |
| Mat heights | According to the product specifications, for mat heights ranging from 12 to 42 mm |
| Dimensions | Customizable size |
| Route | Customizable arrangement and number of guide elements |
| Connection | Existing guidelines may be continued |
| Scope of Application | Indoor and outdoor use as specified in the product documentation; select the specific model that best suits the installation situation |
The heights listed describe the range of the product catalog. They do not imply that every intermediate height or combination is equally available.
To help you make your selection, we therefore take the actual installation situation into account: What depth is available? What inserts are planned? How should the cable routing be arranged?

Distinguishing Between Indoor and Outdoor Areas Correctly
A sheltered entryway has different requirements than an entrance that is directly exposed to rain or snow. Therefore, the description „for outdoor use“ alone is too vague for placing an order.
If possible, describe whether the mat is covered and how water drains in the entryway. The adjacent floor areas and the planned cleaning routine are also relevant.
This allows you to discuss the appropriate model in detail, rather than encountering unresolved issues only during installation.
For which entrances are tactile entrance mats a good idea?
Entrance mats with a tactile guidance system are particularly suitable when a planned route crosses a clean-foot zone. This applies, for example, to publicly accessible administrative buildings, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.
City halls, libraries, and government buildings
In many cases, the route from the entrance to the first point of contact is crucial. Visitors who are unfamiliar with the area should be able to figure out how to get to the reception desk or the information desk.
Planning should therefore extend beyond the entrance mat. A tactile guide within the mat is of little use if there is no connection to the intended destination.
Schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities
In these buildings, different groups of people use the same entrance. In addition to pedestrians, people in wheelchairs, with walkers, and pushing carts may cross the mat area.
That is why both ease of use and practicality should be considered together when making a selection. When submitting your inquiry, please specify what types of rolling loads are actually involved.
Shopping Centers and Transportation Infrastructure
Even during periods of heavy foot traffic, the route must remain easy to follow during daily operations. Queues, promotional displays, or portable barriers should not obstruct it.
In the case of train stations and airports, the requirements of the respective operator must also be taken into account. Therefore, a solution selected for one building cannot be adopted for another without further consultation.

Measurement and installation by rotec's own specialists
You don't have to assess the installation situation on your own. rotec has In-house specialists for measurement and installation. In addition, our staff is available to provide you with detailed advice upon request.
This is especially helpful when existing floor openings, frames, or thresholds need to be taken into account. After all, length and width aren’t the only factors that matter when choosing the right entry mat.
Nationwide On-Site Measurement Service
We offer our measurement service Nationwide, on-site, for a fee . This allows you to have rotec take the measurements for you, rather than having to determine all the order dimensions yourself.
When preparing for a site measurement appointment, the following information is particularly helpful:
- Project Location and Type of Building
- New Construction, Replacement, or Renovation
- Photos of the entrance and an existing mat
- Existing plans or specifications regarding the floor opening
- Contact person for on-site access
Please contact us for information on the cost and schedule of the measurement service at Marcello Canu to.
Installation with a tailored scope of services
We also have our own rotec specialists available for installation. We’ll tailor the scope of services to your specific project.
When submitting your request, please specify whether an existing mat needs to be replaced and whether any work on the frame or subfloor is anticipated. This will help distinguish between the different services required.
However, a site survey and the installation of mats do not replace a comprehensive accessibility plan for the building. If a specialized design plan is available, it should therefore be included in the coordination process.
Replacing an Existing Entry Mat: What Matters?
When replacing existing components, the existing structure largely determines the available options. Therefore, the installation situation should be assessed first.
Distinguish between the frame, the opening in the bottom, and the mat dimensions
The external dimensions of a frame are not necessarily the same as the order dimensions for the mat. Similarly, a measured floor opening may differ from the actual usable surface area.
This is exactly where a professional measurement comes in handy. It provides a basis for selecting the appropriate design.
For the initial consultation, take photos of the entire entrance area as well as the transitions at the edge of the mat. This will help identify which areas on site should be examined more closely.
Take installation depth and floor connections into account
The new mat must fit the existing floor structure. A difference in height may require adjustments to the support or frame.
In addition, the new wayfinding structure should connect to the path layout outside the mat area. A technically suitable mat does not automatically resolve this planning issue.

Example: Replacement in the entranceway of an administrative building
Suppose an existing entrance mat is to be replaced with a tactile version. There is already a guide path in front of the building. Inside, the path should continue toward the reception area.
Then three elements must be coordinated: the existing floor opening, the new mat design, and the path through the door system. The measurements provide the geometric basis. The orientation plan determines where the path should lead.
This example describes a typical planning task and is not a documented rotec project reference.
What standards are important for tactile entrance mats?
DIN 18040-1 and DIN 32984 are particularly relevant for technical classification. In this context, a distinction must be made between building design and the characteristics of the specific product.
DIN 18040-1 addresses buildings open to the public
DIN 18040-1:2010-10 addresses the accessible design, construction, and furnishing of publicly accessible buildings and their associated outdoor facilities.
A single entrance mat, therefore, does not determine the accessibility of the entire entrance. Doors, circulation areas, and other connecting spaces must also be taken into account. DIN Media lists this edition as current and notes that it has been partially superseded by DIN EN 17210:2021-08. Technical source: DIN 18040-1 from DIN Media.
DIN 32984 covers floor indicators and guide elements
DIN 32984:2023-04 addresses floor indicators in public spaces, including their layout as well as their tactile and visual recognizability. Publicly accessible areas within buildings also fall within its scope. Technical source: DIN 32984 from DIN Media.
For this specific project, therefore, the requirements of the technical design must be reconciled with the selected implementation. The product designation „tactile wayfinding system“ does not, in and of itself, constitute proof of compliance with a specific standard.
Why Color Alone Isn't the Deciding Factor
A change in color may be visible without creating a sufficient difference in brightness. Therefore, the guide structure, mat covering, and adjacent floor should be considered together.
Requirements for luminance contrast—that is, the measurable difference in brightness—are also addressed in the DIN 32984. The decorative design should therefore follow the functional planning.
What factors influence the cost?
The price depends on the specific mat design and the agreed-upon scope of work. In addition to the dimensions, the cable routing, connection details, and the existing installation conditions can all influence the cost.
To make a meaningful comparison of offers, you should therefore compare the same services:
- Mat Design and Dimensions
- Arrangement of the Tactile Elements
- Frame and required connecting components
- Requested Delivery and Installation Services
- Any work on existing structures
- On-site measurement (fee applies)
You don't need a complete technical description just to get in touch. A brief description of your project will help us figure out the next steps.
Plan for Cleaning and Operation from the Very Beginning
The mat surface must be easy to clean on a daily basis. At the same time, the tactile elements should be clearly visible, and the pathways should remain clear.
Adjust the cleaning method according to the care instructions for the specific model you received. Not every insert and fastener is suitable for the same treatment.
After cleaning, all components should be back in place correctly. Also, check the joints and the connection of the guide rail.
We recommend a simple routine for operators: Check for dirt and damage, report any displaced elements, and keep the walkways clear. Be sure to involve the reception desk and housekeeping as well. After all, a displaced mat can make it difficult to find your way, even if the mat itself is intact.

What mat heights are available?
The product documentation describes the use of the tactile system for mat heights ranging from 12 to 42 mm. The specific model to be used depends, among other things, on the available installation depth.
Can any existing mat be retrofitted?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The design, condition, and installation situation of the existing mat are the deciding factors. For an existing system, it is therefore important to first determine whether retrofitting or replacement is the best course of action.
Can wheelchairs and walkers use the mat?
Compatibility must be verified for the selected design and its transitions. Therefore, when making your inquiry, please also specify any wheelchairs, walkers, or transport carts that will use the entrance.
Is the system suitable for outdoor use?
The product documentation specifies indoor and outdoor use. When making your selection, consider weather exposure, fillers, and water drainage. Therefore, please indicate whether the mat will be used in a protected area or directly outdoors.
Is a tactile entrance mat automatically compliant with DIN standards?
No. The designation alone does not confirm compliance with standards. Requirements regarding the structural conditions and the guide elements must be reviewed for the specific project. Technical guidelines are provided by DIN 18040-1 and DIN 32984.
